Richard Bonilla
Richard E. Bonilla, 96, is a trailblazing alumnus of San Francisco State College, graduating in 1958 as part of the first class to earn a bachelor’s degree in International Relations and as the college’s first Latino graduate. Arriving in the United States at age 16 with limited English, he overcame early educational barriers with determination and the support of dedicated teachers.
San Francisco State College played a pivotal role in Richard’s life, providing the education, guidance, and global perspective that shaped his career and worldview. Through his studies, he developed a deep respect for diverse cultures and learned the skills that would allow him to serve in meaningful international work.
Richard went on to work in international business and humanitarian service, including the United Nations Development Programme and the UN Peacekeepers. He credits his college experience as the foundation for his lifelong dedication to humanity, cultural understanding, and advocacy.
His journey continues to inspire, proving that perseverance, education, and representation can open doors and leave a lasting impact on generations to come.
