Certificates

The Department of International Relations offer three certificates to choose from: the Global Health Certificate, the International Risk Analysis Certificate, and the Migration and Refugee Studies Certificate. 

Global Health Certificate

About the Certificate

The Global Health Certificate equips students with the knowledge and skills needed to address pressing health challenges on a global scale. Through an interdisciplinary curriculum, participants explore key topics such as infectious diseases, health policy, gender and social determinants of health, and health equity. This certificate is ideal for those seeking careers in public health, international development, and related fields while making a meaningful impact on global health issues.

Required Courses

The Global Health Certificate entails 4 courses (12 – 16 units). Students are required take one CORE course and 3 elective courses. Electives include lower and upper division courses in category A Determinants of Global Health (pick one), category B Intersectionality and Global Health (pick one) and category C, an upper division elective course from either category A or B (pick one). A minimum of 6 upper-division units are required to complete the certificate.

How to Apply

Please contact Certificate faculty advisor Prof. Ellis at bellis@sfsu.edu to declare your interest in obtaining the Certificate and complete an advising session.

Graduation Guidelines

Once students have completed all certificate courses successfully, then they need to follow the graduation guidelines below:

Upon Advisement

  1. The student must pay the CAP application fee ($7.00) for the award of the certificate online via the Student Center.
  2. The student prepares a general Certificate Approved Program (CAP) Form and the Department's MRS form and submits the forms and unofficial transcript(s) as evidence to the certificate advisor (and/or chair) for an approval signature.
  3. The chair confirms all requirements for the certificate have been completed by signing the CAP form and submits the CAP form via email to Khaled Ezzat in Graduate Studies.

Processing Notes

  • CAP forms submitted through DocuSign are preferred.
  • Students can attach a receipt of payment to the DocuSign envelope. 
  • Forms routed outside of DocuSign must be submitted by the academic department directly to Khaled Ezzat (khaled@sfsu.edu) via email.

Form

International Risk Analysis Certificate

About the Certificate

The International Risk Analysis Certificate provides a foundational and interdisciplinary framework for understanding economic, political, and environmental risks across the globe. The goal of the certificate is to provide professionally-relevant coursework about understanding risks that arise from global, regional, and local sociopolitical and environmental conditions that can affect business development and human security.

Required Courses

The IRA certificate (14 – 19 Units) requires foundational courses in International Relations and International Business as well as a career readiness course. The elective courses in the Certificate list provide broad perspectives on international risk assessment as well as regional courses that enhance students’ understanding of ability to research and analyze local conditions. Electives address global risk factors, risk analysis, and mitigation.

How to Apply 

Undergraduate students in upper-division standing with a GPA of 2.0 or graduate students.

Migration and Refugee Studies Certificate

About the Certificate

Migration and Refugee Studies (MRS) Certificate provides a foundational and interdisciplinary framework for understanding economic, political and environmental displacement of people within countries and across state borders. The goal of the certificate is to provide professionally relevant coursework about the global impact of migration and refugee movements as well as an understanding of immigrant and refugee experiences.

The Migration and Refugee certificate is open to students outside of SF State through enrollment in Open University. Please check this list to see if your state of residence is authorized for courses at SF State.
