Based on Dr. Olivia M. Espin's memoir of childhood and adolescence in Cuba in the 1940s and 50s that received the 2021 San Diego Book Award. It recreates a world that does not exist any longer: pre-revolutionary Cuba. The country’s fraught history and political instability are interwoven with personal story to create a web of history, family, analysis, and memories. A young person’s struggle for identity and independence against the background of Cuba’s national struggles. Photographs illustrate the narrative. Reading excerpts will illuminate and enrich details of the story. Participants interested in learning about Cuba as well as those interested in stories of human development will find points of interest in this presentation.
