Professor Sanjoy Banerjee, Chair

Professor of International Relations, teaches courses on international relations theory and methodology, as well as on South and Southeast Asia. His research interests include the same topics. He has publications in the areas of historical structural analysis, the role of nationa l identity and narratives in foreign policy, artificial intelligence in international politics, and political economy. He received his Ph.D. in Political Science from Yale University in 1982.

Professor JoAnn Aviel

Professor of International Relations, teaches courses on comparative
foreign policy and international organization as well as on Latin America. Her research interests include the same topics as well as a focus on nongovernmental organizations. She has publications in the areas of multilateral diplomacy, nongovernmental organizations, and Latin American foreign policy. She received her Ph.D. in International Relations from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University in 1971.

Professor Jean-Marc F. Blanchard
Associate professor of international relations, Associate Director of the Center for U.S.-China Policy Studies, and President, Association for Chinese Political Studies. Teaches courses in international political economy, multinational corporations, globalization, and Chinese foreign policy. Research interests include Chinese foreign security and economic policy, multinational corporations, and the political economy of national security (sanctions and incentives).

Professor Sophie Clavier

Assistant Professor of International Relations, teaches courses in International law, Comparative Criminal Law, International Criminal law, International Organizations. Research interests include the same topics as wellas Franco American relations. Recent publications includetwo articles: Contrasting Franco American Perspectives on Sovereignty" and," Food Fight at the WTO: Can the Precautionary Principle Reconcile Liberalization and Public Fear?Currently involved in a multi disciplinary project using algorithms in media analysis. She received her doctorate from the University of Paris.

Professor Juanita Darling

Juanita Darling is an assistant professor who teaches Latin American Studies, Research Methods, and Analysis. She writes aboutLatin America, exploring how social movements seek support and build consensus, especially through the use of media. She received a Ph.D. in Mass Communication with a certificate in Latin American Studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Professor Burcu Akan Ellis

Assistant professor of international relations. Teaches courses in transnational relations of Muslim societies and core courses in international relations. Ph.D in international relations from American University. Research interests include identity formation within the Muslim communities of the Balkans, and gender, transnationalism and linguistic identity among high-skilled migrants.

Professor David Fischer

Ambassador David Fischer has served as San Francisco State's first Diplomat-in-Residence since 1999. A graduate of Brown University, he studied at Harvard Law School before joining the US diplomatic service in 1991. He served in a variety of posts in eastern Europe and Africa,where he served as an Ambassador. His area of concentration in the State Department included 11 years working on limiting nuclear weapons of the US and USSR. He retired from the State Department in 1991 to assume the presidency of the World Affairs Council of NorthernCalifornia from 1991-1998. His area of teaching is national security, including terrorism and the role of intelligence in national security decision making.

Professor Kathleen McAfee

Assistant Professor of International Relations, teaches about
environment and development, international political economy, and the global politics of food and hunger. After a career as an international development professional, she received a PhD in Geography from the University of California at Berkeley in 1999. She has published a book about trade and development alternatives and articles on bio-cultural diversity, biotechnology, agroecology, food sovereignty, and "selling nature to save it" - the treatment of living things, genes, knowledge, and environmental services as market commodities.

Professor Mahmood Monshipouri; Graduate Coordinator

Mahmood Monshipouri is associate professor of International Relations, teaches courses on international relations theory and application, as well as on Middle East and North Africa. His research interests include topics of human rights and counterterrorism. He haspublicationsin the areas of human rights and democratization, the role of identity construction and social change in the Muslim world, and globalization. He received his Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Georgia in 1987.

Professor Andrei Tsygankov
Andrei P. Tsygankov is Professor at the Departments of International
Relations and Political Science. A Russian native, Tsygankov is a graduate of Moscow State University (Candidate of Sciences, 1991) and University of Southern California (Ph.D., 2000). He teaches foreign
policy, Russia/post-Soviet world, and comparative politics. Tsygankov's research is in the area of Russian foreign policy and international relations theory. Visit Andrei's website.

Professor Amy Skonieczny

Assistant Professor of International Relations. Teaches courses in US
Foreign Policy, international political economy, IR Theory, research and methods. Professor Skonieczny's research interests include social construction of US trade politics, societal influence on US foreign policy, and social theory and narratives in global political economy. She received her Ph.D in Political Science from University of Minnesota in 2008.

Professor Angelika Von Wahl

Associate professor of political science and international relations. Teaches courses in the politics of Western Europe and the European Union and foreign relations of Western Europe, the EU and NATO. Ph.D. in political science from Free University of Berlin, Germany. Research interests include the development of welfare states and labor markets, democracy and social policy, European politics, gender and sexuality, social movements, immigration and citizenship, nationality and nationalism.

Professor Aguibou Yansane
Professor of International Relations & Africana Studies and Director of African Studies, teaches courses on Development & Foreign Policy in Africa, Rich and Poor Nations: The North/South Dialogue, International Political Economy (IPE); and graduate courses on Africa and IPE. His research interests include economic development, North/South economic relations, economic integration, linkages between Africans and the African Diaspora, etc. He has written four (4) books and numerous articles in these areas. He was awarded his PhD, in Food Research Institute (Agricultural and Resource Economics), Stanford University, 1971.
